Racing 92 punishes Bayonne severely! (55-14)
Despite a tight first period and a good state of mind, the step seemed to be too high for the Basques this weekend. After 40 minutes of breaking in, Laurent Travers’ men took full possession of their means in the second act, by making the speed of their three-quarters speak in particular. Without ever stopping, Gaël Fickou’s teammates were not looking for a simple victory this weekend, but rather to send a clear message to a direct opponent as well as to all the competitors in the Top 6. With this improved victory, the Ile-de-France residents are in fourth place in the Top 14, before receiving Toulon. For Bayonne, the hopes of qualification are gradually dwindling.
TOP 14. Toulon, Montpellier… Who lost ”big” this weekend?
Lyon is scared (41-31)
With a team to say the least overhauled, the USAP players showed character, and came close to a resounding feat! With a Dorian Laborde in an unprecedented role as a goalscorer, an inexperienced hinge and players from the academy, Patrick Arlettaz’s men caused many problems for the Lyonnais. Nevertheless, while the USAP led 27-31 with only 12 minutes remaining, the LOU woke up to two flash actions, thanks to the vista of Baptiste Couilloud in particular. Moreover, the latter were even close to pocketing the offensive bonus point at the end of the match! Cruel scenario for Perpignan which does not bring back any points in Catalonia, while Lyon digs its hole a little more in the Top 6.
Brive signs the feat of the day! (26-27)
Traveling to the reigning French champion, and on a “last chance” mission, the Corréziens proved that they were not dead in the Top 14. In a particularly choppy meeting, Said Hirèche’s teammates shot each other in the foot at the start of the match, conceding a red card through Axel Muller. Nevertheless, this fact of play seemed to be beneficial for the blacks and whites, who tightened up and began to doubt the MHR. At the break, only 5-0 for the locals, then 12-6 after the break, before Brive played his last card. The bottom of the Top 14 did not hesitate to send the game in the second half, responding blow for blow to the onslaught of Montpellier. Then, the match went crazy, and while Perpignan won on Lyon’s lawn and Brive was trailing by 11 points 10 minutes from the end, the scenarios were exchanged and Bruni scored the winning try after a multitude of scrums played! Nicolas Sanchez did not flinch against the poles and allowed Brive to believe once again in his chances of 13th place. For the MHR, this defeat changes almost nothing in the face of the season.
Rugby Armchair. The Blues on the roof of Europe for the second consecutive time
The two ogres of our championship were in a state of grace this weekend in the Top 14. During the match on Saturday evening, La Rochelle showed all its mastery on the lawn of the Vélodrome, annihilating all the Var offensives. Beyond the Iron Curtain erected by the Maritimes, the power of the forwards, combined with the accuracy of the three-quarters, simply impressed the Top 14 specialists! La Rochelle seem in European form before the clash against Leinster. Then, Stade Toulousain also secured a victory against a direct competitor. The Toulousains did not shine, and were put in difficulty by a playful Bordeaux team, with an untenable Louis Bielle-Barey! Nevertheless, the reds and blacks have relied on one of the best players in the world to restore meaning to the game, with Antoine Dupont. The latter weighed on the meeting constantly, and was decisive during each test of Toulouse. With this victory, the latter retain first place in the Top 14. For the other matches, Pau and ASM signed two great successes improved at home, without real importance however on the end of the season.
