Stock Market and Financial News for May 8, 2023

This is a bit disappointing after that nice rally on Wall Street on Friday.

The AEX indication is -0.2% after a weekend without too much stock market and financial news. This week there are a lot of numbers again, but the earnings season is really coming to an end and the macro agenda is pretty empty.

  • European futures all open around 0.2% lower
  • The US is now doing around -0.1%
  • In Asia everything and everyone rises a few tenths, only the Nikkei 225 falls slightly

Alibaba +0.2%
Tencent -1,2%
TSMC +0,6%

  • The volatility (CBOE VIX Index) is -14.4% (!) at 17.9 and the BofA MOVE Index (bonds) is -7.5% at 130.2
  • The dollar is down 0.2% to 1.1040
  • Gold is up 0.2%, oil is up 0.7% and crypto is down 4-5% as Binance stunt is? Malfunctions there

Interest rates are back early today:

PostNL’s Q1 figures are better than expected, there is even a profit. Compared to a year earlier, the figures are significantly less, but we already knew that. The company maintains its outlook for 2023: an EBIT result of €70 to €100 million, a free cash flow of €40 to €70 million and a normalized total result of €10 to €40 million.

This was €84 million, €40 million and €90 million in 2022.

No Dutch stock market news this weekend, but there is enough to worry about. In the meantime, we continue to monitor US banks, below you can see PacWest. That went into the rebound on Friday, but it does scrap 95% of the dividend. Tell me if that’s a sign of confidence…

We also have issues such as whether or not there will be a recession, the US debt ceiling thing is not over yet, earnings – Warren Buffett also predicts a fall this year – and the usual geopolitical shizzle. Anyone who waits for all the problems to be solved will never find a moment to invest. Or it must be in a recession?

See our preview of yesterday, among other things, because this time it is slightly different again. We haven’t seen any serious price drops yet. That and value and technology are good together and cyclicals and financials are not, you will not find in the books.

More left at the bottom of this piece, but Saturday was Berkshire Hathaway’s famous annual shareholders’ meeting. And then we always have quotes on Mondays.

As mentioned, Buffett foresees a profit drop this year. The market has been doing that for ages, not (yet) really, or has it already been?

By the way, we do it this week with figures from Ahold Delhaize, ABN Amro, ING, and Pharming. All about that in our outlook as well and this week also pay attention to US inflation, the number of the week.
