The pedestal
As in the previous races, Red Bull also showed absolute dominance in the USA. Max Verstappen won the race ahead of teammate Sergio Perez, who started from pole. Remarkable: The Dutchman only started from ninth place. This after he botched his first lap in Q3 and was then no longer allowed to drive. Two minutes before the end, Charles Leclerc crashed into the wall and the session was stopped. Fernando Alonso was third in the Aston Martin.
The scene of the race
Actually, the entire race to catch up with Verstappen. With his third Grand Prix victory this year, the Dutchman consolidated his lead in the overall World Championship standings ahead of Perez.
This is how Alfa-Sauber drove
Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou missed the points – again this season. The Finn was thirteenth, the Chinese sixteenth.
The grandstand chirping 1.0
Ferrari star Charles Leclerc had a weekend to forget. Not only did he have two crashes (training and qualifying), but he still managed to finish seventh in the race.
The twittering of the stands 2.0
The extravagant driver presentation immediately before the start was not well received by many fans. So it rained criticism on Twitter. To the new F1 anthem composed by rapper will.i.am and performed by a string orchestra, all drivers were individually called out by artist LL Cool J and sent through a line of cheerleaders. The US national anthem followed. The fans spoke of an “embarrassing action”, of “unpleasant scenes”.
Die Stars
Roger Federer, Pat Mahomes or will.i.am were just a few of the many well-known names who attended the Miami GP. Elon Musk and Vin Diesel also attended the race on the southern tip of Florida. The maestro revealed he would be cheering for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. “I think the route is incredible.” Federer was not alone from the tennis cosmos, the Williams sisters were also present.
The voices
Max Verstappen (Red Bull): «It was a good race. I stayed out of trouble, after that it was a clean race and I was able to stay out for a long time on the hard tyres. Then there was the little duel with Checo, but we managed it cleanly. Yesterday was obviously a setback, but I stayed calm and to win a race from ninth place is certainly satisfying. We didn’t know what the weather would be like and we were confident that the strategy would pay off.”
Sergio Perez (Red Bull): “I gave everything. It was a bit difficult with the graining of the tires. I had to watch the tires and make compromises. Max was in a great mood and of course deserved the win. I think the medium was worse than expected at the beginning and caused compromises. We have to analyze this because we didn’t have 100 percent pace.”
Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin): “The car is great, I drove a somewhat lonely race. There wasn’t much to be done up front with the Red Bulls and the Ferraris were worse than expected. Of course we started from the wrong side, which worried us a bit. But I’m happy to take the podium with me. Of course after four podium places we want more, but the Red Bulls are indestructible and fast. Maybe there will be an opportunity in Monaco or Barcelona.”
