TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Lecturer in Political Communication at Gajah Mada University (UGM) Nyarwi Ahmad assessed the relationship between the General Chairperson of the NasDem Party Surya Palo with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) increasingly tenuous. For Nyarwi, this estrangement was marked by a meeting between Surya Paloh and the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.
“This incident indicates that the relationship between the presidents is strained Jokowi and Surya Paloh is increasingly real ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election,” Nyarwi said in his statement, Sunday 7 May 2023.
According to Nyarwi, the door for direct political communication between Surya Paloh and President Jokowi seems to be getting narrower.
“Existence Luhut We can also read the meeting as a representation of someone close to President Jokowi. We know that LBP has long been a close confidant of President Jokowi,” said Nyarwi.
He said that the agenda brought by LBP when he met Surya Paloh could not be separated from President Jokowi’s big agenda. In fact, said Nyarwi, it was not impossible for Luhut to carry out a mission or receive an assignment from President Jokowi when he met Surya Paloh.

“At least convey the messages from President Jokowi to Surya Paloh. As we know, since the NasDem declared Anies Baswedan as a presidential candidate in early October 2023, the warmth and intimacy of Surya Paloh’s relationship with President Jokowi seems to have faded compared to previous periods,” Nyarwi said.
On the other hand, Luhut’s meeting with Surya Paloh can also be read as a meeting of two old friends, who have both taken part in the political and party scene in Indonesia.
“As we know, LBP is one of the Golkar elites and Surya Paloh has also been active in Golkar, although now he has become General Chair of the NasDem Party,” Nyarwi said.
