The win in Breisgau put RB in the pool position in the race for the Champions League spots. Not only did the people from Leipzig win the direct duel with one of their competitors and jumped past the sports club from Freiburg, the other two opponents made a mistake at the same time.
Bayer is nine points behind
On Friday Bayer Leverkusen lost 1: 2 (1: 2) against the Rhenish rivals 1. FC Köln, it was the first defeat in a competitive game since mid-February. Ex-RB striker Davie Selke (14th, 36th) scored for FC, Amine Adli (28th) for Bayer. The Werkself are nine points behind RB.
Yesterday, Union Berlin surprisingly lost their game at FC Augsburg 0-1 (0-0) and are now in a groundbreaking top duel next Saturday against their direct competitor SC Freiburg. Dion Beljo gave Augsburg the lead in the 53rd minute with his third goal of the season.
Union continued their negative series (only one win so far) in their twelfth competitive game against Augsburg, but with three games to go they still have everything in their own hands to fulfill their big dream of the premier class.
Scenarios that lead RB to the Champions League
For this, the Köpenicker have to win against Freiburg. Either way, RB can extend its current one-point lead over both teams if they win their home game against Werder Bremen. A draw in the Freiburg-Union game would mean a three-point lead over both teams with the better goal difference (RB +18, Union +12, SCF +8).
So the Saxons could afford a narrow defeat against Bayern in two weeks if they then win at home against Schalke. If either Union or Freiburg loses, the lead over one of the two teams would be four points, which could mean a draw in the two remaining home games plus a defeat against the leaders.
Either way: If RB wins both home games and loses against Bayern, they are still at least fourth. Bayer Leverkusen should be out of the running.
