Con Murphy Menswear on Patrick Street, one of the oldest and most famous shops in the city, is holding its final sale before closing its doors after more than 90 years in business. Bargain hunters are already queuing up outside the store to take advantage of the discounts. The store, which has kitted out presidents, taoisigh, sports teams, and more during its long history, is closing for a number of reasons. Its owner, Neil Murphy, explained that moving from generation to generation is the biggest challenge for any independent business, and none of his children are interested in taking over. In addition, the store’s long-time manager Donie Walsh is retiring in January, and his departure finalised Neil’s decision to close the business. Despite this sad news, Con Murphy’s Plus Size Shop will continue to trade temporarily at 61 Patrick Street, over Tracy’s Shoes, and return to 60 Patrick Street following refurbishment. Its general menswear business is being transferred to Tom Murphy Menswear, 58 Patrick Street, from September.
