On Sunday, representatives from all khaps in Haryana will come together at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to extend their support to women wrestlers who have accused former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment. The heads of over 20 khaps organized a meeting at Meham Chaubisi Chabutara, where they announced their decision to reach Delhi and urged people from Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan to show their support for the wrestlers. Mehar Singh Nambardar, head of Meham Chaubisi Sarv Khap, presided over the meeting and condemned the treatment of wrestlers by the police on Wednesday night.
The wrestlers allege that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had made multiple inappropriate advances towards them, but the Delhi police has failed to arrest him. Haryana minister Sandeep Singh, who is also facing similar charges, is still enjoying ministerial power, and the Chandigarh police has also failed to arrest him. Khap leaders from Western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan and farm leaders from northern states are also scheduled to reach the venue on Sunday, and they have taken another strong decision, which they will announce from the wrestlers’ dharna.
The entire nation is proud of wrestlers, and the Union government is trying to protect its MP, said Subhash Deswal, a representative of Deswal Khap. The wrestlers are being harassed in every way for raising their voice against wrongdoings of Brij Bhushan. The wrestlers are not alone in this fight, entire khaps, farming community, and women are standing by them like a solid rock.
Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) chief Ajay Singh Chautala said the Delhi police had registered two FIRs against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and the police were investigating the case. Their demand was accepted, and two committees were formed for enquiry and two FIRs were also lodged, he added. However, JJP state chief Nishan Singh said in an interview that they were busy in government work and those who have no work were going to attend the protest.
