(in Finland): Since the dog first became known, it has generated a lot of attention in the media and on social media. It has also had a Spleis established to finance a possible return trip to Russia.
The dog’s origin has been the big question. Where really is home? All arrows point to Russia, and that the dog is missing Sonya from the border town of Nikel.
For several days, Tatiana Isen is said to have fed and kept an eye on the dog. On Wednesday this week, she said that the police have made another attempt to get it to safety.
Isen also has contact with a Russian woman, who confirms that the dog is hers. The owner has made a touching request to help the dog home.
– If the dog cannot be caught, we will have to consider euthanizing it
Shall set out a trap
– I spoke to the Norwegian Commissariat on Tuesday. They said that if it is confirmed that Sonya is from Nikel, then they will negotiate with the Russian side themselves. Today I tried to catch Sonya together with the police, but we failed, says Isen.
During the last few days, she has really stepped up to help the dog escape.
– I left, but the police stayed. Tomorrow they will try again if they don’t catch her today. They almost caught her, but she escaped. It is very difficult, she is very smart and very fast, says Isen.
Together with, among others, police officer Thomas Pettersen, she has tried to catch it.
To iFinnmark, Pettersen says the following:
– We have tried to catch it. We have also been in contact with someone who knows the owner in Russia, she has taken part in the process, but we have not succeeded in getting hold of her yet.
Now Pettersen makes a request to the people:
– Now it is someone from Svanhovd who will arrange a trap. What we now want is for people who want to feed or have contact with the dog to stay away from the area on Thursday and Friday. There are several people who have been out there and fed the dog in different places, we are now asking those who may be concerned to take a break from it.
– He from Svanhovd will set up a trap, and we also have someone who lives out there who will monitor the trap we set. Should we succeed, we will begin the further process of having the dog extradited to Russia, he continues.
Laila has an uninvited guest sneaking around the house: – It’s a little mystery
“We are very worried about our girl!”
– I have been out from nine o’clock until almost half past one. It has been cold and very windy, so now I had to get inside, Isen told iFinnmark on Wednesday.
Isen became part of the case early on when she was involved in virtually confirming that the dog is actually the Russian Sonya. She has contact with the owner in Nikel. Through Isen, the owner has come up with a message that has been published on various notice boards in the municipality:
“Our missing dog is in your neighborhood, her name is Sonya. A distinguishing mark is a small scar under the right eye. We are in contact with the commissariat in Norway and we have given all the necessary information about the dog. Sonya is not aggressive and very afraid – she is afraid of cages. We believe in a miracle and hope that the responsible authorities will be able to help catch Sonya and hand her over to us. Sonya and I lived in the village of Nikel, but suddenly I lost her when we were in the city of Zapolyarny. For several months, I and other volunteers searched for Sonya, but there were many obstacles. Sonya is looking for a way to reach Nikel. She was seen in different villages and on the highway, and she probably ran so far away because she is confused about the direction. We are very worried about our girl! We tried to catch her earlier in Russia, but it was difficult because she runs fast. Now we can’t pick her up because she’s in Norway and we can’t travel there. We want to bring Sonya home!”writes the Russian owner via Tatiana Isen on the Norwegian Facebook group “Grenseboer”.
The ice cream has been feeding Sonya for several days. In the video, you can see a clearly scared and frightened dog.

– I think this solution will work
– What could be the outcome if you didn’t manage to catch Sonya?
– It is a bit cautious, and very slow to get caught. We haven’t gotten to the point where we think about it yet. We try this first, and then we have to make an evaluation after that, replies police officer Pettersen.
According to him, the dog is fine under the circumstances.
– She suffers no hardship. She is fed and has thick fur, so she is doing just fine so far.
– I think the solution we have come up with now will work. It wanders around in the same place, and eats the food that is put out. If it gets some peace and quiet without anyone feeding it, I think this will work out. It would have been very good to reunite it with the owner, he notes.
Will contact Russian authorities
When it comes to who is actually responsible for Sonya, and for getting her home, border commissioner Jens-Arne Høilund says the following:
– The first condition that must be present before we do anything is that there is a dog that we can physically examine. Once someone has got hold of it, we can start investigations. It must then be checked for a chip and other identification possibilities. Once that is done, we can check with the Russian authorities if they know of anyone missing the dog, explains Høilund.
He says that he has received several calls from people who want to know what they are going to do with the dog.
– If the dog is caught, how difficult is it to get it across the border into Russia?
– It’s really very simple, that, but first we have to have a dog to check out. It could come from a motorhome from Germany for all we know, he notes.
At the time of writing, the “Help the dog home” initiative has collected over NOK 17,000.
