“Microsoft Announces Lower Prices for Xbox Series X/S Storage Units in the US”

In the fall of 2020, Sony’s Playstation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S debuted, after many long years with the game consoles’ respective predecessors. Alongside seriously beefed-up hardware to run the games, the duo comes with fast SSD storage, which decimates load times and opens up new features. However, with big games and internal space of up to 1 TB, extra storage is a constant topic.

With the Playstation 5, modern M.2-connected NVM Express drives can be used, but with the Xbox, proprietary plug-in cards from Seagate apply. Now Microsoft announces that at least American customers get to enjoy significantly lower prices on these devices, which since launch have been associated with juicy price tags. The storage units are available in the sizes 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB, which with this announcement ends up being 30-35 percent lower than before in terms of price.

In dollar terms, that means the smallest variant costs $90 instead of $140; the most spacious $280, down from $400. The intermediate variant lands at $150 instead of $220. Currently, prices are unchanged in Microsoft’s Swedish online store, and the same applies, for example, to the German and British versions. Thus, those in need of more SSD storage can currently pay up to SEK 2,600 for 1 TB.

However, similar price cuts are likely to occur globally in the near future, especially as a competing and cheaper alternative from Western Digital is on the way. It can also be added that the usual 1 TB model seen one price reduction of a few hundred Swedish kroner at many retailers, where SEK 2,390 can be found in several places. The future will tell if that will be the new standard level, or if the price tags can be shrunk even further.
