Man wrongfully imprisoned for 32 years receives $13 million settlement

New York: An elderly man who spent 32 years in prison for a crime he did not commit received a $13 million settlement. Victor Rosario, a native of Lowell, Massachusetts, USA, received a huge amount of compensation. In 1982, he was accused of arson and imprisoned.

Rosario was 24 years old when a fire broke out in a building in Lowell. The investigation revealed that the youth had set fire to the building. Eight people, including five children, died in the fire. Rosario, who stepped forward to save those caught in the fire, was arrested and charged by the investigation team.

The investigation team arrested the young man and interrogated him for hours. Despite being forced to plead guilty, Rosario refused. Finally, he was informed that he would be released if he signed the document given by the police. Rosario, who is of Spanish descent, could not read the confession, which was in English. Although he signed it as required by the police, when the case came to court, it was presented as Rosario’s confession.

The court sentenced Rosario to life imprisonment in the case. He was released from prison in 2014 after a long legal battle. In 2019, Victor Rosario sued the Leuven city government, police and firefighters in federal court. A few days ago in the case, the US court ordered to pay 13 million dollars in damages. The Leuven municipal administration has also decided to pay compensation.

After the court verdict, Victor Rosario responded that he has forgiven all those imprisoned. He spent 32 years, more than half of his life, in a Massachusetts prison. Rosario said that during this period he learned how to forgive
