Despite efforts to reach a ceasefire, fighting has raged in Sudan for three weeks now. Concern for those trapped and displaced by the fighting is growing. Aid workers and civilians report severe shortages of medical supplies, food and water.
According to James Elder, UNICEF spokesman for the United Nations, the main victims of the war are children:
“According to the reports we have, 190 children have been killed and 1,700 injured. If you break that down over those 11 days, that means that every hour seven boys or girls were killed or injured.”
Humanitarian workers have also been attacked. Humanitarian facilities, vehicles and supplies – including those from UNICEF – were looted or destroyed.
Now there is a new ceasefire agreement between the Sudanese army and the rebels. But people keep dying.
