1.Defeated in weapons technology and hybrid battles
More than 14 months have passed since Russian forces invaded Ukraine.
During this time, the Russian military’s weapons have been smashed to pieces by weapons such as US and European Javelin anti-tank weapons, HIMARS (long-range precision-guided rocket systems), and switchblade suicide drones.
One of the major reasons why the Russian army was unable to win despite overwhelming superiority in military strength was the inferior performance of its weapons, as reported in the media.
In addition, all of the Russian military’s hybrid warfare, including electronic warfare and cyberattacks, which were viewed as a threat, were discovered and defensive measures were taken by the Ukrainian military.
This is another reason why we cannot win against the Ukrainian army.
2.Unprepared to achieve war aims and goals
Putting together information from US research institutes, Russia’s war strategy was aimed at overthrowing and surrendering the regime of President Volodymyr Zelensky and turning Ukraine into a Russian puppet state.
And it is believed that there was a war goal to capture all or even the capital of Ukraine in a short period of time.
The military operation for this purpose carried out attacks from all parts of the Russian-Ukrainian border, including Belarus.
Assuming that the operation goes well, if all of Ukraine is to be occupied, simultaneous attacks from all sides of the border line of about 2,000 kilometers between the two countries can be considered a strategy that will be adopted as a matter of course.
If there is a high possibility that the operation to occupy the entire area will not go well, the plan should have been to decide the priority in the order of ① to ③ from the following three.
(1) Occupy Kyuu to overthrow the regime.
(2) Secure a corridor from the territory of Russia to the Crimean Peninsula.
(3) Make the Donbass region completely Russian territory.
However, (2) and (3) alone do not lead to the achievement of war objectives and objectives.
Since the strategy to invade Kyiv ended in failure, Russia quickly gave up on (1) and adopted a strategy of (2) securing a corridor to the Crimean peninsula and (3) turning Donbass into Russian territory.
Judging from the realistic strength of the Russian army, this may have been an unavoidable decision.
However, they must have thought that even if they adopted this plan, they would not achieve their war objectives and goals, and that the possibility of utter resistance would remain as long as the current Ukrainian government remains in power.
Russia gave up on occupying Kyiv and did not focus on killing the Ukrainian regime.
This was the indirect cause of Russia’s struggle.
Now, in retrospect, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not use all of the Russian military’s tools of war to seize the war goal of Kyiv early, overthrow the Zelensky regime and end the war.
The lack of resolution was fatal.
