“Moldovan President warns of Russian expansion into Moldova if Ukraine is captured”

Moldovan President Maia Sandu believes that Russia, in the event of a successful capture of Ukraine, would continue its expansion – in particular, by sending troops to the territory of Moldova.

As reported by “European truth“, Sandu told about this in an interview Financial Times.

“I don’t believe that they (the Russians – ed.) would have stopped at the border. Today we are safe only thanks to Ukraine,” the President of Moldova stressed, adding that in the first weeks of a full-scale invasion, when such a threat still existed, the country focused on accepting refugees.

When asked if Sandu planned to leave Moldova in the event of an attack by the Russian Federation, she replied that she did not.

“I would have stayed (in Moldova – ed.), but we expected that we would have to help as many of our people as possible to move to a safe place, which is Romania,” the president added.

According to Sandu, the Russians are trying to “remake the Soviet Union” by aggression against Ukraine.

“They want to return to the old days. And we don’t want that. Moldova was part of the buffer zone for 30 years, and for us it meant poverty, corruption, bad governance, emigration. We want to be part of the democratic world,” she stressed.

As a Financial Times journalist notes, during their conversation, “Sandu rarely drank, but willingly raised a toast to the victory of Ukraine.”

Back in February, commenting on and condemning the Russian war of aggression, the Moldovan President noted that there was a serious threat of occupation of Moldova by Russian troopsHowever, this risk has now been significantly reduced due to the successful actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
