The Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation announced on Thursday (4) the first steps towards the Fifth National Communication, the Biennial Update Report and the Biennial Transparency Reports for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). . These initiatives will be carried out in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The result, according to Science Minister Luciana Santos, will include technical and scientific advances on climate change and the dissemination of research on its impact.

The international cooperation project will receive US$7.5 million in financing from the Global Environment Facility, the financial entity of the Climate Convention. The amount will be used to carry out studies that serve as a basis for the reports, as well as those responsible for decision-making.
“This is a decisive tool that brings together scientific knowledge and parameters for planning effective actions against global warming,” said the minister.

Under the rules of the Paris Agreement, Brazil is expected to present its first Biennial Transparency Report in 2024. The document will outline the country’s progress in meeting its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
