Man Crushed to Death by Statue in Burgas Sea Garden: Murder Investigation Initiated

A 31-year-old man died after being crushed by a statue in the Sea Garden of Burgas. The incident took place on Thursday when the deceased man and his friend were walking and for unclear reasons decided to climb on the statue.

According to the police, the friend of the 31-year-old man got on first. He felt the boards shake and managed to jump. However, the column fell and fatally trapped the deceased.

The prosecutor’s office told bTV that pre-trial proceedings for murder have been initiated, an inspection has been carried out, and technical expertise has been appointed.

“I don’t know what happened. The only thing I see is missing fittings. I’m sure there are a few more statues that if I push I’ll topple. During the day, I spoke with my cousin, who said that his whole life is ahead of him,” the cousin of the deceased Marian Dimov told bTV.

A few years ago, the artist and historian Mitko Ivanov, then chairman of the Union of Artists, sent a signal to the municipality that some of these statues were unmaintained and dangerous. He explained that the sculptors were placed in the Sea Garden in the second half of the 1970s.

“The report was not supported. Today, we have gathered for a bad occasion,” said Zivko Tabakov.

The Municipality of Burgas told bTV that when they receive a report about a damaged statue, they react.

“This is an unfortunate incident that is within the competence of the police. We urge you not to speculate on the grief of the relatives of the deceased,” they say.
