Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said on Friday that Syria will soon be able to return to the Arab League, but that there are many challenges awaiting it in resolving the conflict that has been going on for more than a decade in the country.
Al-Safadi said in an interview with the American network “CNN” that Syria has enough votes among the 22 members of the university to regain its seat.
He added, “The return to the (Arab States) League will happen. It will be symbolically important, but … this is just a very modest beginning of a process that will be very long, difficult and challenging given the complexities of the crisis after 12 years of conflict.”
On Thursday, a spokesman for the League of Arab States said that Arab ministers would meet in Cairo on Sunday to discuss the situation in Syria.
Safadi said Syria’s willingness to make real progress in resolving the conflict will help it win crucial Arab support to press for an eventual end to Western sanctions, which are a major obstacle to starting major reconstruction efforts.
The Arab League suspended Syria’s membership in 2011 as the civil war broke out.
