Secret iPhone Photo Editing Features: Timing Correction, Live Photos, Object Cut-Outs, and Composites

In the previous article, we introduced iPhone/iPad photo editing. In addition to simple processing such as trimming and filtering, you can also adjust various parameters such as highlights and saturation. Even if you don’t use a photo processing app, you can enjoy using only the standard functions.

But you have no choice but to give up on photos with the wrong timing, and you can’t combine photos, right? Actually, both can be achieved with iPhone functions. This time, I would like to delve into a lesser-known editing feature. The steps in this article are reproduced on iOS 16.4.1.

The standard photo-editing functions might make the photos look different? Before editing (left), after editing (right)

In addition to editing, you can also create composite photos like this

Maybe the best timing is hidden?

Do you know the function of “Live Photos”? It is a function that saves 1.5 seconds before and after shooting at the same time as a still image, for a total of 3 seconds, as a video. I don’t need videos, and I think some people say “OFF” because the data seems to be heavy, but there is almost no difference in the amount of data compared to normal photos.

I think that the possibility of avoiding failed photos and the ability to suppress the shutter sound are great. Check the icon on the top right of the screen when shooting.

[カメラ]The screen when shooting with the app.You can check whether “Live Photos” is ON (left) or OFF (right) with the icon on the upper right of the screen.

The example below is a photo that I wish I had released the shutter a little earlier. However, if you shoot with “Live Photos” ON, there may be room for correction.

Photos taken with “Live Photos” ON have an icon added to the editing screen. Tap to display a list of recorded images. Try to find the right timing by sliding left and right.

“Live Photos” also provide insurance when photographing fast-moving subjects such as vehicles, pets, and athletes. Subject blur is unavoidable, but it should come in handy when you want to take an important shot.

cut out the subject

The function to cut out objects from the background has been installed since iOS 16. However, it is only compatible with models equipped with “A12 Bionic” or later chips. iPhone X/8/8 Plus is not applicable. I think some people are unaware of this feature. It’s easy to use, just press and hold the object you want to cut out. However, the clipping range is determined automatically. Know that pictures don’t do what you intend.

Open a photo and press and hold (1) the subject you want to crop. A white pattern moves in the area to be cut out,[コピー]and[共有]menu is displayed.[共有]Tap (2) to display the menu,[画像を保存]Tap (3).A new image is saved that is clipped from the background

Create a “shortcut” for compositing

It’s boring just to cut through the subject, isn’t it? Let’s play with making a simple composite photo.in advance[ショートカット]Create a “shortcut” for compositing in the app. Here, the processing of the shortcut is[共有]set so that it can be called from the menu of

[ショートカット]The app is provided by Apple. It’s a great tool for creating scripts to automate iPhone operations, but it doesn’t seem to be used very often. If you have uninstalled it, reinstall it from the App Store before operating. The procedure is a little long, but once you create it, you can use it all the time.

Synthesize with the created shortcut

By the above operation, the item with the created shortcut name (here, “Photo Synthesis”) is added to the photo sharing menu. For the following, press and hold the subject to select → [共有]Although the operation is performed in the flow of , it is also possible to superimpose and synthesize uncropped photos.

The composite result is saved as a new photo, so the original photo is not changed. You can also add more composites to the composited photo.

Press and hold the subject you want to crop,[共有]TapWhen the sharing menu is displayed, scroll to the bottom and tap the added shortcut item (here, “Photo Synthesis”)

Select a photo to composite. Cropped subjects are displayed overlapping. Pinch in and out to zoom in and out, and place while rotating with two fingers.Once placed[完了]Tap

The contents of the operation displayed at the bottom of the screen during synthesis are as follows.

  • [キャンセル]: Tap when you want to cancel the compositing operation
  • [不透明度]: You can change the transparency of the superimposed clipped image
  • [リセット]: Return to the state immediately after stacking
  • [回転]: Prohibit rotation of cropped image

You can enjoy photo processing only with the standard functions. The original photo will not be changed and overwritten, so please feel free to try it. As long as the iOS version (16.4.1) is the same for the operations in this article, the model does not matter.
