News (Dakar) – The sixth session of the Global Social and Solidarity Economy Forum, which is being organized for the first time in an African country, kicked off today, Thursday, in Senegal.
Senegalese President Macky Sall said in his opening speech that the social and solidarity economy has a “decisive role in the fight against poverty,” adding that it constitutes one of the “principles of solidarity that have been practiced for a long time in Senegal.”
Macky Sall called for generalizing interest in the social and solidarity economy “on a larger scale at the international level, for the joint and sustainable construction of the economy.”
The Senegalese president spoke about the “support and financing tools” developed by Senegal to promote microfinance and to “enroll more young people and women who are often on the margins of traditional financing circles.”
For his part, the opposition mayor of Dakar, Barthelemy Dias, spoke of the city’s “responsibility” in “carrying the voice of Africa” by hosting this forum for the first time on the continent.
Barthelemy called on young people and women to “seize more opportunities offered by the digital market and agribusiness,” and urged “the state, local and regional authorities, and actors of the social and solidarity economy, to unite efforts to expand” the benefits of this sector.
The activities of this global forum, which will continue until May 6, include the participation of international representatives, experts, as well as local elected representatives from various countries of the world.
