Novak Djokovic spends his 686th week in the top-3, becoming the third player since 1973 to do so! Novak followed Rafael Nadal’s success and passed the Spaniard next Monday to focus on record holder Roger Federer.
The Swiss sits at the top of the top-3 at 750 weeks and the Serb has 16 months left in this group to break the record. Novak became the third strongest player on the men’s tour in 2007 after winning his first Masters 1000 titles and reaching a major final.
Djokovic continued his top 3 journey into 2008 before dropping out for five months in 2009 due to weaker results. The Serb returned to the top-3 in the closing stages of the season and stayed there until June 2017!
Novak amassed 399 consecutive top-3 weeks for the third-best streak behind Ivan Lendl and Roger Federer. The Serb struggled with an elbow injury and missed the second part of 2017.
As we all know, Djokovic made a remarkable comeback in the second part of 2018 by winning four major titles and finishing the season as the No. 1 player ahead of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Djokovic returned to the top-3 after winning the US Open and started another remarkable streak that lasted until last July when he missed 2000 ATP points earned at Wimbledon and left the elite group.
Novak Djokovic is the third player with 686 top 3 weeks. Last season, Novak missed two Majors and four Masters 1000 events due to his vaccination status. Still, he finished the season in fifth place after capturing five titles and 35 wins from 38 meetings since Rome!
Novak finished the season with the ATP Finals crown and positioned himself well to attack higher ranking positions in 2023. The Serb captured the title in Adelaide earlier in the season after a thrilling final against Sebastian Korda.
Djokovic injured his left leg and dark clouds hung over his chances at the Australian Open. Novak struggled in the first three games before solving the problem and defying three rivals to advance to the final.
Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets to secure his 10th Australian Open title and add 2000 ATP points to his tally. That was enough for Novak to start his seventh reign on the ATP throne and he will be fighting for that title with Carlos Alcaraz in the coming months.
Novak is spending his 385th week as world no. 1, securing two more and looking good to stay in the top-3 with deep runs at the Rome Masters and Roland Garros.
