Mayor Hennadyj Trukhanov in the Ukrainian port city of Odesa has been arrested in connection with an investigation into suspicions of corruption and embezzlement.
Trukhanov was elected mayor of the Black Sea city in 2014 and since 2017 has been the subject of an investigation into allegations of corruption, charges he denies.
He is charged with having embezzled 92 million hryvnias, equivalent to more than NOK 26.7 million. In 2018, he was acquitted, but when an investigation was launched in 2021 in connection with the purchase of an administrative building in Odesa, he was charged again.
Odesa is a predominantly Russian-speaking city that the Russians had high hopes of capturing quickly after the invasion last year, but has defended itself well.
The arrest of Trukhanov is the latest in President Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s campaign to crack down on corruption, even amid the war. Several high-ranking officials both in the government and in the districts have been arrested or dismissed.
