They come so fast that the radar barely sees them coming and going, says De Jong. “It’s like corn and oil in a pan. You know it’s going to pop, but you don’t know which one will go first, which one will go last or which one won’t pop at all. We don’t know where the most violent ones are outside either. “
Thunder and hail
In any case, the showers will originate from the south. “Around 12, 1 in the afternoon they arrive in Zeeland, Brabant and Limburg. The showers fall everywhere, with the exception of the northwest.”
And like I said, it can get pretty rough. “Thunderstorms, hail, downpours. For a short time, things can really go wild. Five minutes later, nothing is wrong. After such a shower, the sun can shine again.”
Festival
At the end of the afternoon, beginning of the evening it becomes a bit quieter again. “Then the air cools down and the showers lose their nutrition a bit. There may still be a single shower, but the most falls in the afternoon.”
And that is not so pleasant for people who have a nice festival in mind for tomorrow. In fact, it can even become dangerous, says De Jong. “It is unpredictable, but if there is a thunderstorm and gusts of wind during such a festival, that is really something to take into account. I would not be surprised if a festival had to be temporarily shut down due to a thunderstorm.”
De Jong’s tip is to regularly check the ‘-1 hour’ in the Buienradar app. “It is difficult to say where exactly it will get turbulent. If you see a small dot on the map in the app, it can be a heavy shower half an hour later. So keep an eye on whether it is heading your way. “
