Robin Lehner planned to breed snakes to supply thousands of stores.
This is stated by the ice hockey goalie in a hearing by the bankruptcy trustee who The Express have taken part in.
– I created it as a kind of pension savings, he says.
Earlier last winter, Robin Lehner filed for personal bankruptcy due to debts of the equivalent of just over 280 million Swedish kronor.
A significant part of the bankruptcy comes from the purchase of the snake farm in Missouri for over SEK 12 million.
In documentation that Expressen has access to, it appears that he also invested two million kroner from September to November last year to keep the company RL Exotics running for the reptile business.
– I created the company as a kind of pension savings and as something where I wanted to do something good. To be able to do that, I need to grow the collection. So I breed all my animals without selling much. The plan has always been to start selling more of them after my career. I wanted to acquire so many animals that I can deliver to large American pet store chains and around 4,000 stores, says Robin Lehner.
Invested in corals
Just before filing for bankruptcy in December, he also bought corals on a credit card.
– I want to be part of preserving them and making them grow, to sell larger corals instead of destroying the reefs. I have loved animals all my life. I grew up diving in the Red Sea in Egypt, says Robin Lehner.
This NHL season, Robin Lehner has been rehabilitating after hip surgery.
The 31-year-old from Gothenburg has two seasons left on his contract with the Vegas Golden Knights.
The five-year contract is worth just over SEK 250 million and he has previously earned over SEK 200 million during his career.
