The American Boeing Company confirmed that the UAE plays a pivotal role in promoting and accelerating collective international efforts to reduce the carbon footprint in the aviation sector, which causes about 2.5% of emissions worldwide, pointing to the strong response of the aviation sector in the Emirates to support these efforts.
The company stated, during a press conference held in Dubai yesterday, that the UAE was among the first countries in the region that showed a firm commitment – over many years – to dealing with the challenges of climate change, and was at the forefront of countries that signed the “Paris Agreement” and launched its strategy for carbon neutrality 2050. .
In a presentation during the conference, she explained that the aviation sector in the UAE, in turn, showed a strong response in supporting these efforts through the involvement of Emirates Airlines and Etihad Airways in important experiments to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which have reached very advanced stages recently. One of the most recent was Emirates Airlines’ implementation of a test flight with a Boeing 777-300ER using 100% sustainable aviation fuel in one of its engines.
sustainable fuel
“Sustainable aviation fuels are now widely accepted as an alternative to the conventional fuels used by current aircraft, and offer the greatest potential to reduce carbon emissions over the next 20 to 30 years worldwide,” said Brian Moran, vice president of Global Sustainability Policy and Partnerships at Boeing. aviation sectors.
He added, “Scientific studies show that when produced sustainably, sustainable aviation fuel can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80%, compared to petroleum fuel over its life cycle, and has the potential to reach 100% in the future.”
Strong partnership
In turn, President of Boeing in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa, Colgate Gata Ora, said: “(Boeing) and the UAE have forged a strong partnership to enhance sustainability initiatives over the past decade, at a time when our collaborative efforts reflect a common vision, that the transition to the future A carbon-neutral environment brings environmental benefits, while also creating new jobs, driving economic growth and unleashing diversified business opportunities.”
He pointed out that “Boeing” successfully conducted a test flight in 2021 with “Etihad Airways”, using 50% of sustainable aviation fuel mixed with conventional jet fuel, which represents the first test flight in the region, and “Boeing” also signed a memorandum of understanding with the “Institute Masdar for Science and Technology” to cooperate in sustainable aviation research, and promote the development and use of sustainable aviation fuel in the region, while the “Emirates Airlines” Boeing 777-300ER completed in 2023 a successful test flight powered by 100% sustainable aviation fuel.
He stated that the company also expanded its cooperation with AMIDEAST in the UAE, and launched a new three-year program under the title “Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics for Sustainability”, pointing out that this step is proof of Boeing’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector. and paving the way for a more sustainable future in the Middle East and beyond.
He stressed that Boeing will continue to work closely with customers and governments in the UAE and around the world, to achieve the company’s bold ambitions to reduce the effects of climate change, and to strengthen the civil aviation sector’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
He revealed the company’s readiness to present many initiatives throughout the “Dubai Airshow” and the “COP28” summit.
