A group of wrestlers staging a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi were allegedly attacked by a group of drunk Delhi Police personnel late last evening. The police allegedly beat up and verbally abused the women wrestlers, causing injuries to several of them. The incident is the first instance of violence at Jantar Mantar, the protest site of the national capital. The wrestlers had been protesting for 11 days, demanding the removal of BJP MP and chief of the country’s wrestling federation Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who they accused of sexually harassing some of the top wrestlers. The MP denies any wrongdoing, but the protesters are standing their ground. The incident has caused outrage, with leaders across the political spectrum condemning the police’s behavior. It remains to be seen if any action will be taken against the errant officers.
