Riding a giant sandworm is depicted in the first trailer for the sci-fi film Dune: Part Two, released by Warner Bros. Pictures on Wednesday night. The sequel to last year’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel is one of the most anticipated films of the year. It is again directed by the Canadian Denis Villeneuve, Czech cinemas will release it on November 2.

In the first part of the story set in the distant future, the Atreides family moves from the emperor’s decision to a sand planet due to the lucrative mining of spices. There, however, the Emperor joins forces with the Harkonnens, Atreides’ age-old enemies, against him. The successor of the Paul Atreides family, played by Timothée Chalamet, flees with his mother, played by Rebecca Ferguson, to the desert, where they are taken in by the local indigenous people called the Fremen.
In this year’s sequel, Paul intends to avenge his father and take over not only the sand planet Arrakis, nicknamed Dune, but the entire galaxy. “The movie picks up where the first one left off,” director Denis Villeneuve announced last month at CinemaCon, a Las Vegas gathering of pop culture fans.
“In the first volume, Paul Atreides was still an apprentice. Here we see him become a hero,” cites his representative Chalamet server Variety.com. In the first picture, the hero repeatedly dreamed about the girl Chani, who belongs to the local inhabitants of the planet. She is played by the American star Zendaya and will have a more significant role in the second part. “It’s a story about two young people trying to grow up, fall in love and move on,” Zendaya summed up in Las Vegas.
The year before last, the first part of Duna premiered during the coronavirus pandemic, when cinemas were closed in a large part of the world. At the time, the studio made an extraordinary decision and released the film on the HBO Max video library for an extra charge on the same day it sent the film to theaters. Regardless, Dune grossed $402 million worldwide and received ten Oscar nominations. She converted six of them, mostly succeeding in the technical categories.
“Dune: Part Two will be much more action packed. It will be an epic war movie,” announced according to the Hollywood Reporter, the director. He filmed the news entirely in IMAX format. “In the first part, we only used about 40 percent of it, this time it’s IMAX from start to finish,” Villeneuve explained. The staff worked in Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Jordan and Italy.
At the moment, the creators are still working on trick scenes, because of this they will probably miss the world premiere at the Venice festival, where the first Dune was presented the year before, wrote Variety.com.
In addition to Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin or Stellan Skarsgård again act in the new movie. Austin Butler in the role of the evil Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen or actress Florence Pugh, who portrayed the emperor’s daughter, Princess Irulan, will also appear on the screen. “She’s a key player in this whole political space chess game,” director Villeneuve explained.
