In order to improve the traffic conditions on the main road A6 Kaunas–Zarasai–Daugpilis for the transport of Lithuanian and allied military equipment going through Jonava to the Ruklas training ground, as well as to improve transit traffic, preparations are being made to build the southeast bypass of Jonava.
Currently, the project of phase I of this bypass is being adjusted according to the latest needs, and at the end of the year it is planned to announce a tender for the public procurement of contract works, the Ministry of Transport reports.
According to the report, an average of 15.5 thousand people pass by the A6 road section south of Jonava per day. vehicles, traffic jams are forming near the city. The construction of the south-eastern bypass of Jonava will ensure smooth transit traffic in the directions of Kaunas and Zarasai, as well as improve traffic conditions for residents of Jonava going to work in Kaunas and the Kaunas area.
“The need for the Jonava bypass has been known for decades. As a result, together with the Directorate of Motorways of Lithuania, we made a decision to pull out the plans that have been lying around for a long time and move on to specific works. The geopolitical situation that has changed in recent years forces us to take urgent action and look for funding sources so that this bypass, which is important for both civil and military purposes, is built and improves traffic conditions,” says Minister of Communications Marius Skuodis.
This bypass will also improve communication with military units stationed in Rukla and create conditions for the movement of military equipment of Lithuania and NATO allies in Lithuania.
The south-eastern bypass of Jonava will start on the east side from the bridge of the road A6 over Neris at Skaruliai and continue south of this road until approximately the village of Switzerland in the district of Jonava, where it will rejoin the road A6.
The ring road will be built in two stages. The construction works of the first stage should start in 2024 after the revision of the previously prepared construction project. at the beginning of the year, the AB Lithuanian Road Directorate plans to announce the procurement of the second stage design works by July of this year. Considering the complexity of the project, the design of the second stage of the bypass will be completed in 2024, the contract works for this stage are expected in 2025-2026.
In order to take advantage of European Union investments for projects of common interest in the transport sector, the Directorate of Roads plans to submit an application for financing this project from the funds of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
