Critics Slam RTE for Broadcasting UK Coronation as Irish Republicans Protest

Ahead of the coronation of Prince Charles, People Before Profit TDs Richard Boyd Barrett and Paul Murphy have criticised RTE’s coverage and the alleged waste of money on the event.RTE’s coverage of the event will run for four hours and it has been criticised for being inappropriate from a republican standpoint at a time when millions of children in Britain are facing poverty. The broadcast has been described as an unusual choice by RTE, with some calling for the money to be used in other areas. The Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, has defended the event, stating that the United Kingdom’s position as a constitutional monarchy is supported by the majority of its people, and that Ireland should respect their choice. Sinn Fein’s vice president Michelle O’Neill will attend the event in order to build good relations between the people of the two islands.
