May 6, when the new king, Charles III, will be crowned in the United Kingdom, will also be a special day for the monarch’s eldest son, Prince William, who has joined the group of European royals who are still waiting for their turn to the throne, reports the “National Geographic” channel.

For his father Charles, the wait ended on September 8, 2022, when Queen Elizabeth II died. The reign of the mother, who died at the age of 96, was the longest in history. Charles, on the other hand, was the longest-awaited crown prince in world history.

For the momentous moment of the coronation, 74-year-old Charles has been preparing for almost his entire life, or, to be more precise, since the age of three, when his mother, when she was only 25 years young, became queen.

Spectators are waiting for the coronation day of the new monarch of the United Kingdom premiere of the exclusive ‘Charles: In His Own Words’. It offers viewers an intimate portrait of Britain’s new monarch through unique footage, never-before-seen and long-forgotten interviews with Charles. The new program will be shown soon – on Saturday, May 6 at 22.00 on “National Geographic” channel. While waiting for the premiere of the film, we invite you to learn about other European crown princes and crown princesses!

Crown Princess loved by the Swedish people

Current King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia’s eldest child – Victoria – was born on July 14, 1977, but did not become Crown Princess until January 1, 1980. For this to happen, a change in the constitution was required, which stipulates that the heir to the throne is the first newborn, regardless of his gender.

Namely, until that moment in Sweden, only a male child was automatically declared heir to the throne. It also happened after the birth of Victoria’s younger brother, Prince Carl Philip, on May 13, 1979. A little later, after half a year, Karlis Philip, who was proclaimed as the crown prince, lost this title and is currently the fourth in line to the throne after his sister.

Like Charles, 45-year-old Victoria has been preparing her whole life for the day when it’s her turn to take the throne. The Crown Princess has been educated both in Sweden and abroad and even served in the army. In a 2017 population survey, she was recognized as the most popular member of the royal family. Victoria is also married. Since 2010, her partner is former fitness trainer Daniel Westling. Both are raising two children together – Princess Estel and Prince Oskar.

The Crown Prince of Norway who married Cinderella from the people

Norway’s heir to the throne is Crown Prince Haakon, the eldest son of Norway’s current King Harald V and his wife Queen Sonja, who will celebrate 50 years this summer.

Haakon was educated at the Norwegian Naval Academy and served in the Royal Norwegian Navy. He holds the rank of admiral. On the other hand, he has obtained the rank of general in the service in the Norwegian Air Force.

As his spouse, Haakon chose a girl from the people, who was also previously married and now left alone with a son. It should be noted that in 2001, Haakon and his chosen one, Mette-Maritas, wedding caused a major scandal, because until then it was not accepted that the heir to the throne marries a “simple” girl. It must be admitted that she had a very stormy past, in which narcotic substances were also used.

Marius, the adopted son of the crown prince, is currently 26 years old. Haakon and Mette-Marita also have two children together – Princess Ingrid Alexandra, who was born in 2004, and Prince Sverre Magnus, who was born in 2005.

The Crown Prince of Denmark, who saw his wife in Australia

The eldest son of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and her husband Henrik and heir to the Danish throne is 54-year-old Frederik.

Like other Scandinavian royals, the Danish crown prince has received an excellent education, studying political science both in his country and at the prestigious Harvard University in the United States. He has also served in the army.

The prince is a passionate sports fan and this passion brought him together with future wife. Namely, in 2000, the crown prince had gone to Australia, where the Summer Olympic Games were held at that time, and by chance he met Mary Elizabeth Donaldson, who was working as a marketing consultant at that time.

They got married in 2004 in Copenhagen. The couple has four children – Christian (2005), Izabella (2007) and twins Vincent and Josephine, born in 2011.

The special path of the royal houses of Spain and the Netherlands

Although King Juan Carlos I of Spain and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands are alive and well, their children have been on the thrones for almost a decade in both countries. Namely, on January 28, 2013, the then Queen Beatrix announced that she had decided to abdicate in favor of her eldest son, Prince Willem Alexander of Orania. On 30 April 2013, Willem-Alexander became the first male king of the Netherlands since Willem III, whose reign ended in 1890.

Willem Alexander and his wife Queen Maxima have three daughters – Katarina Amalia, Alexia and Ariane. 19-year-old Katarina is the crown princess who will one day inherit the throne.

On June 2, 2014, the Spanish monarch also abdicated, and a little later than two weeks later, on June 19, his then 46-year-old son, Prince Felipe, ascended the throne. When he became King of Spain, Felipe took the name Felipe VI. It should be noted that at 55 years old, he is the youngest king in Europe.

While still a prince, Felipe took for a wife television journalist Leticia Ortiz-Rocasalano. They met when Leticia was making a report about a natural disaster, in which she interviewed the crown prince. Well, the couple has two daughters – 17-year-old Princess Leonora of Asturias, who will one day inherit the throne, and Princess Sofia, who is 16 years old.

Britain: the wait of a lifetime

On 8 September 2022, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, her eldest son, Prince of Wales Charles Philip Arthur George Windsor, was announced as the next king. Charles is the 13th monarch of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The fact that he would one day inherit the crown influenced many, if not all, decisions in his life. Also, of course, the now infamous choice to marry Lady Diana Spencer, even though Charles has only loved one woman all his life – Camilla Parker-Bowles.

It seems that the world has watched every step of his life with a critical eye – both the fabulous wedding of Charles and Diana, and the countless scandals and romance with Camilla. The world also looked at the high-profile divorce and a few years later the sudden accident of Princess Diana, in which some even tried to blame Charles.

However, deep inside, the future king is quite different – he loves books, old woolen suits and every year indulges in ritual dances with Indian chiefs. Charles is a dreamer at heart, a plant lover and a man with modern ideas and a desire to save the world’s ecology from destruction.

On May 6 this year, not only Charles will be crowned in Westminster Abbey, but also Camilla, whose new official title will be Queen Consort.

On the other hand, the eldest son of the new monarch, the 40-year-old Prince William of Wales, will officially become the heir to the throne. Already during the lifetime of Queen Elizabeth II, there were rumors that Charles should have abdicated in favor of William, who is much more popular with the public. But William will have to wait his turn to the throne, just like his and Catherine, Princess of Wales’s eldest son to Prince Georgewho will be 10 years old this summer.

Prince William studied at Eton College in London, then attended the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where he studied art history. There he met his future wife Kate Middleton. On April 29, 2011, the couple got married, having been together for almost ten years. William and Catherine have three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

In honor of the coronation of the new King Charles, the “National Geographic” channel offers viewers a unique program about the eventful life of Charles. A story that few would imagine for themselves will tell about the queen’s son, who grew up in front of millions of watching eyes, the Prince of Wales, who has been waiting for the throne for more than 70 years and a man who was trapped between his duty to the royal house and forbidden feelings for a married woman.

The premiere of the program “Charles: in his own words” can be seen already on Saturday, May 6 at 21.00 on “National Geographic” channel.
