Australian Man’s Remains Found in Two Crocodiles After Fishing Trip Tragedy

The remains of an Australian were found inside two crocodiles, after he went missing while fishing in the waters of an area infested with these reptiles, local police announced Wednesday.

Police said the 65-year-old man, identified by Australian media as Kevin Darmody, had gone on a fishing trip in north Queensland (northeast) on Saturday with local residents.

Witnesses later heard the man “screaming and crying out very loudly, and then a huge rush of water followed,” according to Cairns Police Inspector Mark Henderson.

Rangers armed with rifles later killed two crocodiles several meters long in Lakefield National Park, where the group was hunting.

The police inspector described what happened as a “tragedy”, saying that analyzes conducted on the crocodiles “unfortunately made it possible to identify the remains of the missing man”.

Henderson said the victim was a “very nice guy” who was a bar manager from a rural village in the north of the state.

The area’s fauna and flora officer, Michael Joyce, warned that Queensland was “the land of crocodiles”.

“If you’re in the water and especially in Lakefield, which is specifically designated (a site) for crocodile protection, you should expect to see crocodiles in those waters,” he said.
