Choking a child is the worst nightmare that most parents fear, especially with paramedics’ constant warnings of the importance of learning to overcome this difficult situation so that children’s lives are not endangered.
Paramedic Nikki Gorkotz said that the fear of harming the child by hitting his back from behind may hinder the exit of the object stuck in his respiratory system.
In an educational video clip, the paramedic showed how to slap the child on the back forcefully, which prompted a viewer to ask: “Aren’t those blows very harsh, the children are very weak?”
“Every second your child is left inside is another second your child goes without oxygen,” Gurkotz said. “Saving your child’s life is the priority.”
The British National Health Service says:
- If you can see an object in your baby’s mouth, be sure to remove it as squeezing it can make the condition worse.
- If the child is coughing, encourage him to continue as he may be able to expel him.
- If the cough is ineffective (silent or cannot breathe properly), seek help immediately.
