A dense cloud of smoke could be seen on Hönggerberg early Tuesday evening. A VBZ bus was in full fire. News scouts report on the fire. “There was a very loud bang,” said a news scout to 20 minutes. Further pictures and videos reach the editors. The dense, black cloud of smoke can be seen from afar.
As reported by Protection & Rescue Zurich, the articulated bus burned out completely. More than 50 passengers were able to leave the bus on time and unharmed. The spread of the flames to a nearby ETH building was prevented thanks to the rapid intervention of the Zurich Protection & Rescue fire brigade. However, there was a lot of property damage.
Bus driver reacts with presence of mind
Shortly before the bus stop, the bus driver noticed a small, white cloud of smoke and an unusual smell in the rear area. He had the presence of mind and immediately stopped and asked the 50 to 60 passengers to leave the bus immediately. “Just a short time later, a fire ignited in the rear area, which spread rapidly, so that within minutes the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames,” continued Schutz & Rescue Zurich.
The rework would have been very time-consuming. «First the remaining operating materials had to be pumped out by the professional fire brigade and disposed of professionally, and the badly damaged vehicle had to be made available for professional removal. In addition, it was checked and ensured that the operating materials that had escaped and the contaminated fire-fighting water did not get into the sewage system in an uncontrolled manner,” said Schutz & Rescue Zurich.
Subsequently, the nearby sewage ducts would have had to be sucked off by Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich (ERZ) and the contaminated substances removed. The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
