Signing an agreement worth 30 million dollars to supply Kiffa with drinking water

News (Nouakchott) The Minister of Economic Affairs, Othman Mamodou Kan, signed today, Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, with the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, an agreement to contribute to the financing of a project to supply the city of Kiffa and its neighboring cities with potable water via the Senegal River.

According to a briefing by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the value of this agreement, which represents the contribution of the Abu Dhabi Fund to the project, is 110 million dirhams, equivalent to (30 million US dollars), while the total value of the project funded by the institutions of the Coordination Group is 320 million US dollars.

The Minister of Economic Affairs said that the project to provide the city of Kiffa and its neighboring cities with a modern network, starting from Gori, passing through Selibaby and Kinkousa, to Kifah, “will contribute to the provision of potable water drawn from the Senegal River.”

He pointed out that this project will contribute to population stability and reduce the movement of individuals in search of water, especially in the summer.

In his turn, the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development said that this project “constitutes an important turning point that will contribute to the development of the water sector in Mauritania, which will improve the quality and sustainability of potable water supplies to reach major regions and cities in the country.”

He added that financing the project will support the development plans of the Mauritanian government by improving the standard of living and health conditions of the residents of the targeted areas.

And he indicated that the project will meet the water needs of the residents of the city of Kiffa and the surrounding cities and areas, noting that the project includes the supply and installation of a pipeline linking the Senegal River and the city of Kiffa with a length of 277 km.

Last year, 6 Arab and international funds approved a joint plan to finance a project to supply the city of Kiffa, central Mauritania, with potable water, at an amount of $317 million.
