“The Super Mario Bros Movie” Breaks Records with One Billion in Sales in Just One Month

The “Super Mario Bros Movie” is unstoppable. Around four weeks after the cinema start, Mario’s colorful adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom has reached a billion dollars worldwide recorded. Of that, $490 million was generated in the United States and $532 million outside the United States. There is no end in sight to the wave of success – the film was released in Japan and South Korea just last week.

This makes “The Super Mario Bros Movie” the most successful release so far in the cinema year 2023. It is also the tenth most successful animated film and by far the most successful video game adaptation of all time. The plumber easily leaves gaming greats like “Pokémon”, “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Angry Birds” behind. The top ten currently looks like this:

1. The Super Mario Bros Movie – 1,02 Mia.
2. Warcraft – 439 Mio.
3. Detective Pikachu – 433 Mio.
4. Rampage – 428 Mio.
5. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – 405 Mio.
6. Uncharted – 401 Mio.
7. The Angry Birds Movie – 352 Mio.
8. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – 336 Mio.
9. Sonic the Hedghehog – 320 Mio.
10. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter – 312 Mio.

At Rotten Tomatoes the film is in the public voting with over 10,000 votes with a score of 96%. The trade press gave Mario’s animation debut a very poor rating in comparison, at 59%.

Film producer and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto believes even that the bad reviews contributed to the immense success of the film.

Millions of viewers also on Twitter

“The Super Mario Bros Movie” is not only a success in the cinema. Last week, the film was full-length several times on Twitter uploaded. This is made possible by the new upload function for Twitter Blue subscribers. This allows video clips of up to an hour to be uploaded in high quality.

The clips generated millions of views before being discovered and deleted several days (!) after Musk had previously fired most of Twitter’s security and compliance team. Anyone who knows Nintendo knows that it’s best not to mess with the Japanese video game giant when it comes to copyright should.
