Beware of ‘Phishing’ Scam Pretending to Be European Union Warns Police Headquarters in La Rioja

LOGROO, 2 (EUROPA PRESS)

Agents belonging to the Police Headquarters of La Rioja, warn of a specific type of scam, in the form of ‘phishing’ or identity theft. Scammers send an email pretending to be the European Union to get the personal data of the victims.

The perpetrators are people who want to get our data to use it with bad intentions, surely to empty our bank account or to make purchases with our cards.

To deceive users, it seems that the attackers send an email in which they pose as the European Union, an email that those affected have received in both Spanish and English, in which they warn you that, if you have been victim of fraud, you can benefit from a large compensation of money from the European Union.

Impersonating the identity of the institution, they lie saying that financial compensation is being provided to all victims of fraud.

PHISHING

It consists of sending fraudulent email or text messages impersonating another person or entity, and thereby obtaining sensitive personal information, such as passwords or financial information, by tricking recipients into providing such information through a link malicious or a fake web page. Phishing can be used to commit fraud, steal money, or even spread malware.

The email goes like this:

“Hello dear beneficiary. The European Union provides compensation to all fraud victims. Your email was found on the list of scam victims. A total of 3.5 million will be paid as compensation for all fraud cases in the year 2023. Consider yourself lucky to have been selected to receive compensation from the European Union.”

Your full name: Your address: Your country:…………

Copy of your passport.

Phone number: Contact me now for more information

In this same email, various information is requested, such as full name, passport copy, telephone number, address and country. This is the ‘modus operandi’ of scammers, promising a large sum of money, asking for the information to collect that money and using that information to commit crimes.

As usually happens in these cases, we must be wary of this type of email in which they offer us millions of euros overnight. In addition, these texts are often poorly written, with poor concordance and questionable information. All these aspects should make us suspect that it is a scam.
