Residents of Sandymount in Dublin are urging Dublin City Council to reconsider allowing two-way traffic on Strand Road. The road has been partially restricted to just one lane since last October for Irish Water works. However, local residents are concerned that if two-way traffic is reinstated, it will be “untenable” for their health and wellbeing. The council had planned to create a coastal cycle path on the road, which would have reduced traffic to one lane. However, a High Court challenge by local resident Peter Carvill and Independent councillor Mannix Flynn means that the council must now wait for the court to decide whether it needs planning permission for the path. In the meantime, the Strand and Beach Road Residents’ Group is calling on local councillors to consider issues such as the safety of cyclists, noise and emissions, conservation and climate change when making their decision.
