Inside the Met Gala: A Night Dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld’s Legacy

Anna Wintour, the director of Vogue magazine, has also been in charge of the Met Gala since the 1990s, which has become one of the most glamorous and must-see annual events of showbiz.

Since Monday morning, the curious and fans began to arrive outside the museum located on Fifth Avenue to have a good place from where they can glimpse the stars and steal a photo.

“We got here around 8 or 9 in the morning,” says college student Joseph Pogoda. “It’s great to be able to see celebrities that you normally see on TV and in the movies, or like their music, like Lil Nas X.”

This year, the party, which is always held on the first Monday of May -except in the years of the pandemic-, was inaugurated as a preamble with an exhibition by the Costume Institute dedicated to the emblematic designer Karl Lagerfeld , died in 2019.

“Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty (Karl Lagerfeld, a beauty line)” is intended to pay tribute to his years in the industry at the helm of Chanel, Fendi, Chloe and his own label, while carving out the future of fashion.

The stars of the gala usually dress in motifs alluding to the theme, which probably translates into a parade of vintage silhouettes inspired by that of the elegant German couturier, known for his black suits, his white ponytail, his everlasting dark glasses and mittens. also black.

Lagerfeld is not without controversy. Despite his permanent struggle against the scales, he was critical of curvy women. In the last years of his life, he scorned the #MeToo movement and those who dared to come forward as victims of sexual harassment.

“The show focuses on Karl the designer, his work and not his statements,” says show curator Andrew Bolton. “We have not included any of the more controversial or offensive comments from him.”

– ‘Immense talent’ –

The protagonist of the night will be Lagerfeld, his fans and his famous friends.

Wintour, who for decades was a close friend of Lagerfeld’s, is likely to wear Chanel as usual.

Carla Bruni, ex-model, singer and ex-first lady of France was at the presentation to the press of the exhibition on the designer of German origin. “It is an honor to be here to celebrate the extraordinary career of my dear friend,” she told AFP.

In addition to his “immense talent”, “creative power” and “captivating charm”, Bruni highlighted above all his “kindness”.

Wintour, the high priestess of fashion, this year invited actresses Penelope Cruz and Michaela Coel, tennis legend Roger Federer and pop singer Dua Lipa to co-host the gala.

The guest list is the best kept secret of the organizers, although around 400 people are expected to attend.

On Fifth Avenue, Pogoda expects to see Oscar-nominated actor Austin Butler (“Elvis”), or Kris Jenner, the mother and manager of Kim Kardashian.

Attendance at the ball is by invitation only upon payment of $50,000 and a table reservation costs $300,000. The proceeds from the gala finance the Costume Institute.
