Herning. The face spoke volumes. Aaron Mensing was happy with his performance and especially the experience with the Danish national handball team at Jyske Bank Boxen.
»It was fun to play in boxing, it was my first time too. I’d love to have more of these experiences,” says Mensing.
The 37:31 victory against Sweden and the win of the EHF Euro Cup will have been the last for the backcourt player for the time being, while Flensburg-Handewitt is under contract with SG. For the 25-year-old, who grew up in the German minority in Denmark, things will continue after the summer break at GOG in Denmark. A step that was not easy for him. The desire for more playing time than will probably be possible in Flensburg has prompted him to make the cut.
»I go with one laughing and one crying eye. It’s a bit melancholic, but I’m also looking forward to my upcoming task. But it’s tough for me because I felt really comfortable in Flensburg this season. I found my role and was able to show what I can actually do. That’s why it makes me a little sad that I’m going to go now. I’m hoping something will come up in the future so I can come back. Of course, I’m also looking forward to the role at GOG. I’ll play a lot with a good team that plays a good role internationally. The fact that I can play defense is also important for me when looking at my career,” said Mensing.
In Denmark, however, he only signed for one year – and with good reason.
»GOG is a top team that is currently fighting against Barcelona in the Champions League for a place in the Final4. The prospect of the big role that is waiting for me is outstanding. I still have the feeling that I’m not done with the Bundesliga yet. I would like to go back to the Bundesliga. Whether that will be in a year or later remains to be seen. In any case, I’m not quite done in Germany yet,” says Aaron Mensing clearly. A return to his heart club, SG Flensburg-Handewitt, where he started playing handball in his youth, is definitely possible for the 25-year-old.
Machulla exemption surprised
Then, however, under a different coach than Maik Machulla. Aaron Mensing was surprised and unprepared for the release of the SG coach at the beginning of last week.
»In the morning I had a conversation with Maik and in the afternoon he informed us that he was no longer a coach. Actually, we all assumed that he would remain the coach. That’s not the case now, somewhat surprising. But as players, we have to accept the club’s decision,” says the throwing backcourt player.
It’s no problem for Aaron Mensing that things will continue with the previous assistant coach. “It will definitely continue with Mark Bult until the end of the season and we all still have goals that we would like to achieve together,” said Mensing.
