BSP MP Afzal Ansari, brother of notorious gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has been disqualified from Lok Sabha due to his conviction in a 2007 Gangsters Act case. The Ghazipur MP-MLA court sentenced Afzal to four years in prison and fined him ₹1 lakh. Mukhtar Ansari was also convicted in the same case and has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and a penalty of ₹5 lakh. Under the Representation of the People Act (RPA), any member convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for two years or more will be disqualified from the House. The Gangster Act case against the Ansari brothers pertained to the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai and the kidnapping and murder of VHP leader Nand Kishore Rungta. In a similar development, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also lost his Lok Sabha membership after his conviction in a 2019 criminal defamation case.
