FC Bayern imposes ban on sitting in standing room section, sparking controversy among fans

FC Bayern makes some fans shake their heads!

Several short videos have been circulating on Twitter since Sunday before the kick-off of the Bundesliga game against Hertha (2:0) in the stadium. This shows how a folder goes through the ranks and asks the spectators not to sit. The instructions even hit two children.

In a video, the folder says: “Now don’t ask why. Just stand please. OK? Thanks!”

Bavaria forces standing room guests to stand

Background of the measure: The fans addressed were in areas that are designated as standing room – but seats are also installed there. The clips show that this is the lower level of the north stand in the transition to the east stand with the coaches’ benches.

In the Allianz Arena, the lower tiers behind both goals are sold as standing room. This means that the tickets for Bundesliga games only cost 15 euros there – and are therefore a whopping 65 euros cheaper than the most expensive seats (80). In the In the Champions League, the difference is even 131 euros (19 to 150 euros)!

But: Since there are fold-out seat shells in the area in question, the lower tier of the north stand, as on the straights, the seats there could theoretically also be used as seats. Many of the spectators addressed therefore want to sit until kick-off and are critical of the ban on sitting – especially since, according to the author of the tweet, the videos were recorded 75 minutes before kick-off.

Some of the clips show the unfortunate folder having heated discussions with fans. When asked why, he just says, “I don’t know. I can not explain.”

Other viewers recognize that the folder is forced to implement a requirement of the club. When they say, “It’s just your job,” he replies, “Exactly! Really well recognised.”

Why can’t the audience sit down there?

BILD clarifies: In order for the fans to get their required standing room in the stadium, the seats were made into a standing area. The seat shells stayed. But: Thanks to the standing room, more fans are allowed in the block – 1.8 times as many as before when they were seated.

Means: not every fan can stand in front of a seat shell – and therefore is not allowed to sit down there!

Example: 18 fans must stand in front of ten seating shells so that the block can be filled and fans do not have to stay outside at the end because fans are sitting on the other side of the block and thus block standing space.

According to BILD information, the discussions have been going on since the fans returned after the corona pandemic. After that, supporters kept making claims about sitting times on the shells. Curious: before that there were no problems with it.

Two other things lead to the ban on sitting: the fire protection regulations in the standing block, and the fans only paid for standing room – and not for a seat.

By the way: The discussions should have ended by the summer!

FC Bayern and the arena management rebuild the north curve during the break. Then the seats in the middle of the block become pure seats with seat shells. And the standing areas in the corners of the north curve will have pure standing room (without seat shells) with a factor of 2 in relation to the current number of seats.

So there can be no more discussions about the ban on sitting…
