One of the leaders of the ruling Georgian Dream, the Mayor of Tbilisi, Kakhi Kaladze, said that Georgia is ready to fulfill all the criteria necessary for obtaining the status of an EU candidate, but if the country is not granted the status, this “won’t be a problem.”
According to him, Georgia deserved this status already last year, and the refusal to grant it was a political decision of the EU, due to the fact that the country did not join the anti-Russian sanctions and did not get involved in the war.
“I have said many times and I will say again that Georgia deserved the status of a candidate for the European Union. It is true that the decision was made on Ukraine and Moldova, but we were the first to deserve it. Do not think that we are reproaching a warring country. God forbid. On the contrary, I will always be happy with the success of the Ukrainians. However, if you look realistically, in terms of parameters and figures, then Georgia was the first to take concrete steps – carrying out reforms, fighting corruption, etc.,” Kaladze said.
As Kaladze stated, “the government of Georgia is a problem for them because it does not join the sanctions, does not start a war and does not open a second front in the country.”
“Our government is ready, scrupulously fulfill the conditions and do everything for the country to receive this status. What decision they make is no longer up to us. If they give it to us, we will be glad. If they don’t, and that’s not a problem.” – he said.
