The president of the people of Algeciras, specialist Libardo Pinto Liscano, paid a worthy tribute to all the coffee growers of his municipality, in the central park of this town considered the Agricultural and Musical Pantry of the department of Huila; where I summon all the members of the Municipal Committee of Coffee Growers, its most representative current and historical leaders who have influenced the development of coffee growing in the territory (Álvaro Espitia, Luis María Gómez, Héctor Franco, Juan de Dios Toledo, Carlos Polo and Gerly Zambrano), to the 5 extension agents, to the associative groups and to the coffee grower in general, offering them recognition for the work they do for coffee growing families. In the midst of these distinctions and recognitions, he delivered a monument to the coffee growers, in homage to the hard work of the coffee families that have promoted the progress of these communities for several decades, on the brink of the celebration of the first centenary of the people of Algeciras in the year 2024.
The first line of the economy of the municipality is given by the production and commercialization of coffee, of which it is the first coffee producer in the northern zone of the department of Huila and occupies the sixth position at the departmental level after Pitalito, La Plata, Acevedo, Garzón and Suaza, with 3,771 coffee farms, of which 3,344 coffee families are registered in the SICA coffee information system, with 6,063 hectares of coffee. It has more than 15 coffee associative groups of which the most representative are (Villa Líbano, Aso Laguna, Agrofe, among others). Of highlighting different family initiatives of processed coffee, two urban coffee shops (Algeri Coffee and Amelia Café), where citizens and foreigners can enjoy the benefits of the delicious coffee from Algeciras.
“This is a tribute to our coffee growers, it is our identity, it is our first line of the economy. For many years the stigma we had was that of guerrillas and we want the whole world to know us for what we are, coffee growers, I am the son of coffee growers, I managed to study thanks to my coffee grower parents, and in this monument that since it was built has been the center of attraction for our visitors, because we also want to promote tourism with our identity. The coffee monument reflects the work of the coffee family, a tribute to the chapolera woman, the ancient ways of loading by mule and the transition towards traditional transport in Toyota and Chivas campervans, which ultimately generates progress for our communities in Algeciras”. indicated the mayor Libardo Pinto Liscano.
