“Food Prices on the Rise: Carrots and Lettuce Leading the Charge, Onions and Potatoes Expected to Follow”

Food prices continue to rise. This is shown by the data of the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Markets. Although the overall price index was lower for the last week, it has increased by almost 3% since the beginning of the year.

The most serious price increases for the last week were carrots – by 12.4%, and lettuce – by a little over 10 percent.

Imported tomatoes have become cheaper by 10.6%, cucumbers by 9.9% and eggs by 5%. Food prices remain the highest in Silistra, Plovdiv and Sofia.

Plovdiv is among the cities with the highest food prices in our country. “Vitosha” cheese costs BGN 20 per kilogram, oil is BGN 5. Eggs are the most expensive in Sofia – 46 cents wholesale, and beans in Silistra – BGN 5.52 per kilogram.

Among the products expected to continue to rise in price in the coming weeks are potatoes and onions. This was said by the director of the Commodity Exchanges and Markets Commission in the “Speak Now” program.

“I don’t remember in the last 15 years that we have seen such a price for ripe onions. The potato harvest in Germany is also bad, so we also have a problem with potatoes, in practice Germany is a very large producer of onions and potatoes and there if there is a bad harvest, there are beginning to be problems all over Europe,” said Vladimir Ivanov, director of the Commodity Exchanges and Markets Commission.

For the last week, wholesale potatoes are almost 4% more expensive, there is also an increase in beans, cow’s cheese and butter.

Bananas, type 500 flour and rice are sold cheaper. In the program “The Day Begins” on BNT, financial analyst Mika Zaikova commented on the food price website created by the government.

“The goods in the small basket continue to increase in price, this site is a good thing, it informs us, but it does not work,” commented Mika Zaikova, an economic analyst.

According to her, the only option for prices to really go down is to increase control over traders.
