Spotify and Elon Musk have spoken out against Apple’s App Store guidelines in the past. In a new exchange on Twitter over the weekend, Musk and Spotify CEO Daniel Ek again questioned Apple’s guidelines, with Ek calling them “absurd” and Musk saying they present a ” serious scaling problem”.
The conversation started when Twitter last week launched support for all users to offer “subscriptions” on the platform. Musk followed up on the announcement, after polling users, to explain why subscriptions take longer to appear on iPhone than on the web.
“Note, it takes a few days longer for subscriptions to become active on iPhone compared to the web, as all subscriptions currently need to be approved by Apple,” Musk explained.
This refers to the App Store’s guidelines for in-app subscriptions to digital content, which Twitter must adhere to since these new subscriptions are available through the iPhone app.
The CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek, then tweeted quote Musk’s message and again criticized Apple’s guidelines:
Ek: “That’s nonsense… How would that scale with every creator on every platform on the internet? And what if a platform thought the right commission was 0% or 10% instead of Apple’s 30%? »
Musc“It becomes a serious scaling challenge.
Spotify has been a vocal opponent of App Store guidelines in the past. The company has even filed antitrust complaints against Apple in the EU, arguing that Apple can offer Apple Music subscriptions in the app without any penalty, while Spotify should give Apple 30% (or 15% from the second year) of its subscription income if it did the same.
For his part, Musk has previously said that Apple’s App Store fees essentially amount to a 30% tax on internet usage.
