“The Time-Jumping Narrative of Final Fantasy XVI: Exploring Three Eras in Clive’s Life”

Square Enix is taking a different approach to the story of Final Fantasy XVI, and it’s something to think about.

In Final Fantasy XVI, we see three eras in the life of our protagonist Clive, so the narrative shows how he has changed over the years. The time-jumping approach would also be excellent in the case of the previous trilogies (Final Fantasy XIII, possibly the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake), since the different periods would show a different environment, and in XVI we can see how the world of Valisthea is slowly falling to dust. The death of Clive’s younger brother Joshua seems to be the protagonist’s motivation, and it influences his personality and goals.

The division into three eras, in addition to Clive, also makes the development of his comrades more elaborate than if it were a more concise story. If Clive focuses more and more on the goal (revenge), it can be better shown how much he is turning away from his old self. This structure is similar in narrative to Final Fantasy VII Remake, except here we get three games instead of one. But because of this, you have to pay three times as much for it (even more), and there is no question that the entire game will be on one platform, because the first part of the remake trilogy was released on PlayStation 4, and the sequel is already on PlayStation 5 is being made (the first part received a PS5 port with the subtitle Intergrade). Another factor is development time. It could even be 2026, 2027 before Final Fantasy VII Remake comes out in its entirety…

Three parts of Final Fantasy XIII were released in four years: the first part in 2009, XIII-2 in 2011, and Lightning Returns in 2013. Here, although Square Enix experimented between the parts, and the Japanese publisher tapped the wallets of the fans in this way… but the success was less and less there, as the parts of the trilogy came out. That’s why it’s a good idea to put the story in ONE game. Easier accessibility and the fact that you don’t have to wait for the parts give a lesson to Final Fantasy VII Remake, which can also get to where the thirteenth trilogy is because of the console generation change.

Final Fantasy XVI will be released on June 22nd for PlayStation 5.
