Blood transfusion: Two regional centers to be built in Yaoundé and Garoua

Dr. Manaouda Malachie, Minister of Public Health (Minsante) has just launched a specific national call for tenders for the construction of the National Blood Transfusion Center (CNTS). The structure will house the Inter-regional Center (Centre and South) for blood transfusion in the Center region of Yaoundé in the Warda district (Lot 1).

The second lot concerns the construction of the inter-regional center (Adamaoua, North and Far North) for blood transfusion in the North region in Garoua. The work, the start and amount of which were not disclosed in the Minsante press release, is financed by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).

According to official figures, Cameroon’s annual needs are estimated at 400,000 blood bags for the whole country. As part of its annual review, Cameroon’s National Blood Transfusion Center (CNTS) announced that blood donations had dropped by around 20% between 2020 and 2021, leading to an impossibility to meet all requests. of blood transfusion.

In Cameroon, the authorities reveal that blood transfusions are subsidized up to 42,000 FCFA per blood bag. That is to say that the pocket, sold at 18,000 FCFA, should have cost 60,000 FCFA. This high cost covers the in-depth examinations carried out before the transfusion of blood to a patient, the equipment used and the care of medical personnel, explain the authorities.
