A third-party power management utility has appeared – NVIDIA GPU Power Management, which allows you to make many fine-tuning applications for GeForce graphics cards.
Modern games like Cyberpunk 2077 sometimes require a lot of skill to run on some maps like RTX 4090, because they consume more than 450 watts when path tracing is enabled. However, there are older games that do not require additional power, and all the extra performance is wasted if the same cards draw more than 400W of power, producing frames at a refresh rate faster than the monitor’s refresh rate.
Some of the most common applications for power limiting or frame rate locking include MSI Afterburner (one of the best GPU applications available) or the NVIDIA System Management Interface (NVIDIA-SMI) command line which allows you to change settings manually, but the new NVIDIA GPU application Power Management allows users to manage power through a simple user interface.
This tool is not the brainchild of NVIDIA. It uses the NVIDIA GPU driver application and allows users to individually change the power and memory management settings of each application so that all games can be customized without the need to be in the game or application. This graphical user interface (GUI) tool does work that is normally only available through command lines.
Application NVIDIA GPU Power Managementcreated by developer Simon Meiser, is available through Sourceforge, and he also created another utility, the AMD Radeon Setup Tool.
The NVIDIA GPU Power Management Tool provides users with the following options:
- Automatically apply power limit after system boot: Automatically apply GPU power limit after OS boot.
- Power limit profile management (NVPL profile): You can define power limits for your application in NVIDIA Power Management. The power limit range depends on your graphics card. Typically, the GeForce RTX 4090 has a larger maximum and minimum power range.
- Adaptive video memory clock control: Adaptive clock frequency of video memory. Application whitelisting automatically adjusts the minimum frequency of video memory to prevent deep GPU power savings.
- NVIDIA GPU performance status monitor.
Since this is not an official application, its use exposes the user to certain risks. Installing new software, in this case NVIDIA GPU Power Management tool, should take place after creating a system backup.
The program has been tested by virus detection software, but this does not mean that the risk has been eliminated. Always be careful before installing software from third party sources.
