Five children and teenagers were slightly injured on Sunday after a rally car left the road during a race near Angoulême (Charente), AFP learned from the prefecture and firefighters.
The five injured, aged 7 to 17, were transported to Angoulême hospital in “relative emergency”, firefighters told AFP, confirming information from the newspaper La Charente Libre.
Four other people were taken care of in shock, so the pilot and the co-pilot, according to the prefecture.
Leaving the road on a bend
The accident occurred around 10 a.m. during the Rallye de la Guirlande, a French Rally Cup event in Asnières-sur-Nouère, on a circuit closed to traffic.
“One of the competing vehicles left the road in a bend and hit people who were in an area not authorized to the public,” explained the prefecture.
When it left the road, the vehicle involved was traveling “at an estimated speed of 100 km / h”, said the firefighters. The race, aligning modern cars and historic vehicles each year through the Cognac vineyard, has been canceled.
