Hypertension a Significant Predictor of Poor Outcomes in Patients with Upper Tract Urothelial Cancer: Study

A recent study presented at the 2023 American Urological Association Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois revealed that hypertension is an independent predictor risk factor for worsened oncologic and survival outcomes in patients undergoing radical nephroureterectomy for the treatment of upper tract urothelial cancer. The study evaluated a total of 865 patients and reported a significantly higher rate of high tumor grade in patients with hypertension compared with patients without hypertension. Multivariate analysis showed hypertension to be an independent risk factor for all-cause mortality, cancer-specific mortality, and recurrence. The study concluded that controlling blood pressure is extremely important for the survival of patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma, especially when undergoing radical nephroureterectomy. Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and improve outcomes with improved hypertension control.
