A human case of Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever was confirmed on April 21, 2023 at the Dalal Jamm National Hospital Center in Guédiawaye, informs the Ministry of Health in a document. Marie Khemess Ngom Ndiaye announces to this effect, the activation of the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC).
“Following the confirmation of a human case of Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever on April 21, 2023 at the Dalal Jamm National Hospital Center in Guédiawaye, the Health Emergency Operations Center (COUS) is activated”, reads the document.
Dr Mamadou Moustapha DIOP, the Director of Disease Control, is appointed Incident Manager.
Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), according to the WHO, is a common disease caused by a virus (Nairovirus) of the Bunyaviridae family, transmitted by ticks. It causes outbreaks of severe viral haemorrhagic fever, with a case fatality rate of 10 to 40%. It is endemic in Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East and Asia, in countries below the 50th degree of northern latitude, the geographical limit of the main vector species, a tick.
Although an inactivated vaccine, produced from mouse brain, has been developed against CCHF and used on a small scale in Eastern Europe, there is currently no vaccine for human use that is safe, effective and available at large scale.
In the absence of a vaccine, the only way to reduce the risk of infection in humans is to make people aware of the risk factors and to educate them about the measures that can be taken to reduce exposure to the virus.
