“Remembering Luciano Pavarotti’s Unforgettable Outdoor Concert in New York”

In 1993, Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti performed in New York for a memorable outdoor concert. On the program, great opera arias and a selection of popular Italian songs.

On June 26, 1993, more than 500,000 people gathered in Central Park to listen to Luciano Pavarotti, then considered “the greatest tenor of the 20th century” since Enrico Caruso. Accompanied by virtuoso flautist Andrea Griminelli, the legendary gospel choir of the Boys Choir of Harlem and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by his childhood friend and accomplice Leone Magiera, the singer transports the public by interpreting an anthology of great opera arias, from “Lamento di Federico” (L’Arlesiana by Francesco Cilea) to “E lucevan le stelle” (Tosca by Puccini) until the grandiose finale with “Nessun dorma” (Turandot by Puccini). Also on the program for this legendary concert by “Big P”, which disappeared in 2007, a selection of popular Italian songs, including “Non ti scordar di me” by Ernesto de Curtis and the planetary Neapolitan hit “O sole mio”.
